Abstract:
 
This seminar shows how the three main methodologies of operations research—deterministic optimization, applied probability, and discrete event simulation—have been applied to three logistics and transportation problems.  First, we develop a new mixed-integer program and extended look-ahead heuristic algorithm for the block relocation problem.  This problem is inspired by the operations at seaport container terminals—the places in seaports where container vessels are loaded and unloaded, and where containerized cargo is temporarily stored while awaiting a future journey.  Second, we use methods from applied probability to evaluate the performance of a generic serial material handling system with inter-vehicle buffers and blocking.  Finally, we develop a novel discrete event simulation model to analyze the operational and financial performance of a reservation-based car sharing system that allows users to make one-way journeys.  This system is characterized by a fixed set of stations, a fixed number of cars, a limited number of parking spaces at each station, and an online reservation system.  The various shortcomings and advantages of the three modeling techniques are discussed.
 
Biography:
 
Matt Petering is an Associate Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  In his research, he develops math and computer models and modeling techniques that can help to find ways to improve the efficiency of logistics, transportation, manufacturing, and service systems.  He has authored 14 refereed journal articles that have appeared in journals such as Transportation Science, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Economics, and Transportation Research E.  He holds PhD and Master's degrees in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan; a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Washington University in Saint Louis; and a proficiency certificate in Mandarin Chinese (HSK level 4).
