Title : In-Vehicle Systems and Intelligent Speed Adaptation
Speaker : Prof. Oliver Carsten
Leeds University
Date : 27th June (Thursday) ***Special Date***
Time : 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Venue : Room 513

Abstract:
European vehicle manufacturers, and indeed vehicle manufacturers around the world, have introduced a host of electronic driver assistance systems of various forms. Some manufacturers have also announced a vision of accident-free driving in the future. Yet the real safety value of many of the systems on offer is open to doubt. This talk will indicate what is the empirical evidence for the safety
benefits of some of the technologies. It will also discuss the evidence for the safety benefits of one specific system, Intelligent Speed Adaptation, which is targeted at discouraging and even preventing speeding.
Biography:
Oliver Carsten is Professor of Transport Safety at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds. His major research focus is on driver interaction and safety with new driver support systems. He led the UK national project on Intelligent Speed Adaptation and chairs the Road User Behaviour Working Party of PACTS, the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety. He has provided advice on safety policy to the UK Department for Transport and the European Transport Safety Council.
